Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 4/6/2018

I was in my local Target last night, perusing through the electronics section and I saw the album cover for Mýa’s “You Got Me” off her forthcoming T.K.O. album. I actually had to turn away for a brief second. I did a sneak peek listen on Amazon Music and it was a pretty good track. Of course, my immediate observations were related to what I was seeing on the cover for that single: (1) the black bra is, to steal a line from Michael Buffer, “the lineal, legitimate and universally-recognized undisputed” must-have lingerie piece in any woman’s wardrobe and (2) 38-year-old Mýa would absolutely wreck my life. Regarding the latter of those observations, I much rather preferred the 24-year-old version, even with her stalkerish ways. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: Mýa’s “Fallen” music video.

How I first came across this moment? I first came across the video while catching the tail end of an episode of BET’s Access Granted on October 9, 2003.

What it meant to me then? From the start, I loved the music video…mostly because “Fallen” is my favorite track off the Moodring album. I did notice the Darren Grant tendencies in it too…the passing shots of city landscapes and videos ending almost the same way they started. That was evident in music videos he directed before this particular one. Think Craig David’s “Fill Me In.” Think SWV’s “Rain.” Think Boyz II Men’s “Pass You By.” The video itself was intriguing: Mýa stalking a dude and taking a bath in his apartment and everything. On my first viewing, I didn’t think much of it. I was too focused on her obvious beauty and the swag Hassan Johnson rocked with that jacket and Kangol. I didn’t really notice the stalkerish aspect of it until Valorie Drew pointed it out a couple of days later when we were in Dallas for the State Fair of Texas. The video actually jumpstarted my fascination with the Toronto skyline. Though I first saw it in Glenn Lewis’ “Don’t You Forget It” 2 years earlier, the look in “Fallen” made it a “must-visit” for me…and that was even with CN Tower noticeably absent on account of making it look like New York City.

What it means to me now? Up until watching it for the purpose of this post, I hadn’t seen it in maybe 3 years…even though “Fallen” gets major rotational play in the Juan Thomas Presents…Get With Me playlist in my Windows Media Player library. I rocked it heavy when I was feeling the Canadian Cutie. It kinda fizzled out when Mercedes came along and that whole stalking thing is actually a bad look in today’s society. Dude should’ve pressed charges. Anyway, it’s still my favorite Mýa music video so I’ll probably watch it several more times in the future.
