Last night, I had a bit of an issue with my T-Mobile service. My phone was saying that the SIM card was reading. Using my work phone, I called T-Mobile tech support and they fixed the issue right away…and even arranged for a credit for the inconvenience. It’s that kind of service that endears me to them as my mobile phone carrier. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: my return to T-Mobile.
How I first came across this moment? In November 2006, I was out in the Bay Area on military leave, linking up with a friend I met online. It was during that trip I discovered that Sprint was giving it to me up the keister on my mobile phone bill. Apparently, they changed my service plan without my permission and refused to change it back. So, in protest, I launched the Sanyo 6200 phone I got from them into San Francisco Bay—where it probably still is today—and I took myself to the nearest T-Mobile store in Downtown San Francisco. I explained the situation and was welcomed back with open arms after 3 years away.
What it meant to me then? Back in November 2006, being back with T-Mobile felt like home. I had started with them when they were VoiceStream Wireless. I only left for Sprint because they were the only mobile phone carrier on Sheppard Air Force Base when I made the decision to take on a contract for the first time in September 2003. T-Mobile allowed me to keep my original phone number and they always offered me the latest and greatest…not to mention the military discount, which saved me hundreds of dollars a year on my bills.
What it means to me now? I almost left T-Mobile in May 2010. I gave Verizon a shot in a time where they allowed you to cancel everything without penalty within a 5-day period. I gave it 1 day and realized my loyalty was to T-Mobile. Here I am, all of these years later, and I’m still rocking with the magenta and white. It’ll be that way for a long, long time. I guess you can say I’m T-Mobile for life.
