For the past 4 Fridays, I’ve been tuning in to the new Amazon FreeVee channel and its Bosch: Legacy series. This first season has been 10 very high-drama episodes and the show will definitely be a candidate for Best New Television Series of 2022 later this year. The spin-off definitely picked up where the original left off last year. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the Bosch television series.
How I first came across this moment? I first came across the series in June 2014, when I subscribed to Amazon Prime. I was introduced to Amazon Prime Video in the process and Bosch was one of the Amazon Originals being heavily promoted. I tuned in and saw the familiar faces of Titus Welliver, Jamie Hector, and Lance Riddick.
What it meant to me then? I was intrigued. It was a Los Angeles-based police procedural. Not since NBC’s butchering of Law & Order: Los Angeles did I happen upon a cop show based out of Southern California that I actually liked. Having read a couple of the books, I found myself immediately attracted to the series because the storyline was somewhat similar. It didn’t hurt to have Welliver in there as the gritty, veteran detective and Hector as his dressed-to-the-9s partner. Riddick as a leader in another police department wasn’t a bad touch either.
What it means to me now? The series concluded with the 7th season last year. It’s easily my favorite TV show on Amazon Prime and one of my favorite police procedurals of all time. aside from the astute way in which Harry Bosch went about his thing, I was very fond of other characters in the series…like Sergeant Mankiewicz and his on-time words from the Hollywood Division desk or Detective Pierce and his progression…and his murse. I felt like it was much more left to the story than the ending, where a furious Bosch hands his badge to Irving and starts a post-retirement career as a private investigator. I’m glad that the spin-off is here because we get to fill in some of the natural progression.
