A Mother’s Love: Cassandra Wrenn

There is nothing like a mother’s love. When a woman learns she is pregnant, there is a mix of emotions. You are happy; scared; excited and nervous all at the same time. As a first-time mother, you wonder, “Am I going to be a good mother? How will I know how to take care of a child?” Your every thought from that moment on is about your child; and how he or she will be affected by what you do or don’t do.  Even if you are married, that child becomes your instant priority – nothing else matters. You rearrange your whole life- what you eat; how much you sleep; where you go; and who you are around. A mother’s love will make you do that without any questions.

I was 19, when I had our first child. My husband and I were two scared but extremely excited young people who were embarking on a fantastic lifelong journey. It was like we started to plan our whole lives in the matter of days after his birth- where we were going to live; and what we were going to do; and what things we needed to change in our lives.  We went on to have two other children, and all three of them are completely different and amazing adults now.  Love is not only what it says but more importantly what it does.  Teaching our children to love God; love themselves (self-esteem); and respect others was paramount in our family.

Looking back over 37 years from that time, the Proverbs 22:6 scripture – “train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it,” should be every mother’s goal. It is not just for you to do when they are little but continue to do as they become adults and have their own family. He or she is still your child at age 21; 40; and until one of you departs this earth. You will always call them your children. A mother’s love is forever. I did not stop training our children when they graduated high school or moved out of the house. A mother’s job is never complete. You just adjust your teaching/training methods and respond to questions as they ask them.

As a mother I have numerous favorite moments, but now some of my favorites are seeing them with their own children and repeating some of the same things I said to them when they were young. Isn’t it funny how you hated hearing your parent(s) say it to you when you were a child but now as a parent you say the same thing to your child too? My grandchildren are receiving the benefits of my training their parents. And prayerfully, my grandchildren will teach their children some of the things they learned from their parents. Even though, they are grown, I love that they still reach out for advice and use it in their lives. A mother’s love is forever. I am so godly proud of each of our children and their families.

Thank you for contributing. I think you delivered the key line: “a mother’s love is forever”. Even for me, a few months shy of 38, I find myself seeking the refuge of my mother and her unconditional love because I know it’s one of the safest spaces for me…and I still get to be a child.
