Tomorrow will be my 5th anniversary as a married man. That means on this day 5 years ago, I celebrated my final day as a bachelor. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: Bachelor Day.

How I first came across this moment? For me, the Bachelor Day concept started when I made it clear that I didn’t want to participate in the conventional activities that encompass the last days that men spend as bachelors…you know, nightclubs or strip clubs or drink fests and stuff. That wasn’t my style then and it isn’t my style now. So me and the guys decided on a visit to the College Football Hall of Fall in Downtown Atlanta followed by go-kart racing at K1 Speed in Duluth and dinner at Dave & Buster’s. That’s pretty much how we did it on my last night as a single man.

What it meant to me then? The entire day meant a lot to me then. I was happy to be around my guys and overjoyed to spend my last day as a single man with them. For so many years, as I labored through The Lost Decade of Dating, I leaned on them and expressed my hope that I would reach the finish line of getting married. Just being able to hang out and have good, clean fun with them meant a lot.

What it means to me now? 5 years later, I still feel the same about the day. Of course, I still feel some kind of way about the Just Juan Bachelor Day Grand Prix. I literally had the fastest car on the track but some terrible qualifying resulted in me placing 4th. At some point, we’ll all come back together and I’ll right that atrocity. Anyway, Bachelor Day was a moment I won’t soon forget. It was fantastic.
