Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 5/21/2021

Today is Friday and on Fridays, the local trash and refuse company services my neighborhood for trash pickup as well as recycling. It’s usually an uneventful matter with the exception of Ashton waking up to look out of the window at the garbage truck workers doing their great work. Today was different because of something I placed in the recycling pile. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2.

How I first came across this moment? I came across the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 on March 27, 2014. I was in the Best Buy at Cordova Mall in Pensacola. I had no business being in there as I really didn’t need any new electronics but the product promotion of the Microsoft Surface on Elementary moved me to check it out in real person. While checking out the Surface, the salesperson suggested the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2. I gave it a test spin in the store and I liked it. I ended up purchasing it and a Garmin GPS.

What it meant to me then? At the time, it was definitely something different for me. It had been 4 years since I had a PC complement after my Apple iPod Touch went kaput. The tablet was basically allowed me to leave my notebook PC at home on my road trips as it provided flexibility and it had many of the same applications as my HP Pavilion. The 12” screen was definitely a great touch as was the syncing with my phone and with my computer. I didn’t lose much in the way of stuff. It had a camera, which allowed me to take pictures and do video calls. The on-screen keyboard made it a legend. What really moved me about it was the stuff Samsung offered alongside the device: (1) a $25 Google Play Store credit, (2) a year of free Gogo Inflight WiFi, (3) a 3-month trial subscription to Hulu Plus, (4) a 6-month trial subscription to WebEx, (5) 50 GB of Dropbox space, and (6) a year subscription to BusinessWeek. The tablet proved to be a boon to me when it came to watching sports. I was able to watch upwards of 10 college football or college basketball games at one time as a result…2 on the television’s PIP feature, 4 on the computer, and 4 on the tablet. That made me a lot smarter with my bowl game picks and of course, my March Madness selections.

What it means to me now? It was a good 7-year run with the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2. I certainly got my money’s worth out of it. But, over the last 1 ½ years, I noticed that it wasn’t performing as efficiently. I tried to hang on to it just to possibly give Ashton something to play with but there are better—and actually more age-appropriate—options out there for him. So, I wiped it a couple of days ago and placed it in the recycling bin last night. It was a fantastic machine and one day down the line, maybe I’ll replace it with another Samsung Galaxy tablet.
