Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 4/30/2021

I was up in the wee hours this morning checking work emails, paying bills, and handling business I would otherwise be able to if I wasn’t in Spanish class all day. I was tuned in to my Windows Media Player and the Carlos Santana-Michelle Branch collaboration, “The Game of Love” was playing. I haven’t heard that track in at least 7 years. It was one of the tracks I played to pep myself up ahead of my 1st date with The Canadian Cutie. Hearing Michelle Branch got me to thinking about her sound and the quality of it. Almost immediately, her best track came to my remembrance and that brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: Michelle Branch’s “Are You Happy Now?”.

How I first came across this moment? I first came across the track in early June 2003. It played on 103.7 FM AKA The Q.

What it meant to me then? I immediately liked the music beat…the whole lead-in and all. When Michelle hit the high note with “…and I don’t care”, I was sold on it. Although I was in a very happy relationship situation at the time, the lyrics really reminded me of the position I had been in over a year before in a failed relationship. Something about that whole “Would you tell it to my face/Or have I been erased” part hit differently. It really didn’t get much play from me nor did I hear it much after I left for college and the Air Force. The whole drama with The Community Planner got it some play from me via YouTube in the Summer of 2011 but that was about it.

What it means to me now? Amazingly, I’ve never had “Are You Happy Now?” in my Windows Media Player library. I can’t really explain how this happened so I’m just going to go out on a limb and assume that it was one of the tracks that didn’t get downloaded after I parted ways with LimeWire. Obviously, that’s changed now because that whole Hotel Paper album is in my library and this track will definitely see some use in the coming months and years.
