Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 1/15/2021

I was sorting through some of the available films on the IMDb TV app on my Samsung TV and I came across a film I hadn’t seen in over 20 years. I paused my perusal through the film database and watched the flick. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the Men at Work film.

How I first came across this moment? I first saw the film in 1990 on HBO. It was a couple of guys—Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez—are garbage men and I was a big fan of garbage trucks as a 6-year-old.

What it meant to me then? As a fan of garbage trucks, I was very much into the film…though I didn’t understand the plot. The way the guys lugged the dead body around reminded me of another film with somewhat of a similar concept: Weekend at Bernie’s.

What it means to me now? As a man of my mid-30s, I better understand the film. That understanding makes me appreciate certain aspects of it much more…like the street sense of Louis (Keith David), the conscious of Jack Berger in whistleblowing, and why Carl (Sheen) was so interested in a Susan (played by a young Leslie Hope from The River). It’s not really popular with film critics but it has a fan in me for exuding some semblance of 90s California cool.
