Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 11/27/2020

So I checked out Child’s Play on Google Play a couple of nights back. I’m always leery of remakes of historically successful films because they oftentimes ruin the legacy of said film. But I was pleasantly surprised with the remake of the 1988 thriller. The modern technology spin made it a bit more intriguing. Lost in the shuffle of the film is the doll that was the basis of the films. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the My Buddy doll.

How I first came across this moment? There were quite a number of gifts under the Christmas tree for me in 1990. One of them was my first-ever gaming console. I also got other stuff like Hot Wheels cars, action figures, and a Baby Rowlf, which was my de facto teddy bear. I also got a My Buddy doll that year.

What it meant to me then? To be honest, I didn’t think much of the doll. I was scared of it really. I had stayed up with my Aunt Tracey and watched Child’s Play and was scared out of my mind. So for like a year, I had an uneasiness in playing with the doll. I ended up giving it to my little cousin, Steve, when he, his mother, and sisters moved around the block from us. Whenever I would go over to their house, he seemed to enjoy playing with it.

What it means to me now? In hindsight, I probably should’ve kept that My Buddy doll. It was the African-American version, too. I definitely could’ve given that to my son as an heirloom or something. In my mind, I’m still creeped out by it…mostly because the eyes were always open and it had that weird grin. Let’s just say going to see the remake of the movie didn’t exactly help.
