I was watching Woman in Gold last night and I was impressed by Helen Mirren’s performance. She’s a vastly underrated actress…often overshadowed by Meryl Streep and Glenn Close. I remember the first time I saw her on TV. It was during an episode of Reading Rainbow, where she narrated Marjorie Priceman’s How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. Don’t ask me how I remember that? I just do. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the Reading Rainbow TV series.

How I first came across this moment? I was introduced to the series back when I was living with my late great-grandmother. She was big on getting me into books at a young age and she put me in front of the TV to watch the show every afternoon.

What it meant to me then? Reading Rainbow meant everything to me as a young child. From the iconic theme song to the featured book of the show to LeVar Burton incorporating the episode’s theme into real-life examples. My all-time favorite episode was the one about hats. That one still tickles me when he put on the hockey goalie’s mask and ended up at hockey practice.

What it means to me now? I actually watched the series until it ended in 2006. Chavon once chided me about it but it was one of those shows you couldn’t stop watching. I wrote in Triumphs & Tribulations VII that I would one day get the entire series for my library and introduce it to my kids. I don’t think the boxed DVD set is available on Amazon these days but it is on Amazon Prime Video. Once Ashton is a bit more understanding of words and what he sees, I’ll introduce him. I’m sure he’ll love the stories and I’ll be sure he doesn’t take my word for it.
