Over the past couple of days, the Powerball lottery jackpot has swelled to over $150 million. Whomever the winner of that jackpot is, their life will be forever altered. I hope they are great stewards of the newfound increase in their life. I did purchase last night but I think I would be happy if ended up getting 1 of the winning numbers. With this much money on the line, however, I wish I was 2015 Biff Tannen from Back to the Future Part II with the almanac. Actually, even better than Biff, it would be grand to be Gary Hobson and get a copy of tomorrow’s Chicago Sun-Times today. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the Early Edition TV series.

How I first came across this moment? I watched the series premiere in September 1996. I had seen previews for it during the week leading up to its debut in the 8pm slot on September 28.

What it meant to me then? From Day 1, I was intrigued by the show. The concept of receiving tomorrow’s news a day early was fascinating. Of course, Gary Hobson (Kyle Chandler) did exactly what most people would do in such a situation: use the newspaper for financial gain. But, he shocked me by only getting what he absolutely needed and dedicated the rest of the newspaper’s mystique to helping others…like getting his friend, Marissa (Shanésia Davis) a service dog or by saving countless lives. Every week that I watched, I was very much interested in how Gary was going to be able to save the day and change the headline. I liked the show. It was quite entertaining.

What it means to me now? I watched Early Edition for its entire duration on CBS. It’s been over 15 years since I’ve last seen an episode in syndication but it’s still a show I have pleasant memories about. It was one-of-a-kind and I don’t think there will ever be another show that can replicate it…not even CBS’ latest offering in God Friended Me.
