Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 3/13/2020

On my way back from an appointment in Silver Spring this morning, I stopped through my neighborhood Safeway to grab a few items to hold me over during this period of uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 virus. While trying to make a decision on cookies, I noticed that Safeway carried individual cheesecake slices from The Cheesecake Factory. These weren’t the slices you pay $9 for from the actual restaurant but rather miniature pieces at a $3 price. They actually looked like an incredibly overpriced snack from my childhood. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the Kraft Philadelphia Snack Bars.

How I first came across this moment? I first came across the Philly Snack Bars back in the early-to-mid 90s. My mother used to do a lot of grocery shopping at the Food Fair on 6th Avenue South in the Titusville neighborhood and one of the desserts she got for us was the Kraft Philadelphia Snack Bars. I tried it and I became hooked.

What it meant to me then? Back then, it was your typical pre-teen reaction to desserts: devouring them until they were none left. The Snack Bars typically lasted only a day or two between me and my sisters…mostly me. I remember I ate 5 of 6 bars once and it pissed my mom off.

What it means to me now? I haven’t tasted the Philadelphia Snack Bars since my days in Valdosta, where I enjoyed them as a staple dessert. I haven’t seen them in a store since early 2007. Kraft discontinued them at some point so there will be no future enjoyment of them for me. But when they were available, they were the bomb.
