Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 10/11/2019

Earlier today, I was watching an episode of Black Mirror and the lovely Alice Eve was in it in a rather shallow role. Of course, I remember her much better as Molly McCleish, the smokin’ hot event planner that plays Kirk’s (Jay Baruchel) love interest in She’s Out of My League. The film was actually a “Best New Film” candidate in The Best of 2010 series in the old blog…on the strength of Alice Eve’s character giving the average guy a shot but more for it introducing me to a particular music track. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: Hall & Oates’ “Kiss on My List.”

How I first came across this moment? I first came across the track while watching the aforementioned She’s Out of My League film. Kirk’s friends were doing Hall & Oates cover songs and I found that one very interesting. I looked it up and ended up adding it to my Windows Media Player library.

What it meant to me then? Initially, it was just a track with a very catchy beat. It was totally 80s and I loved it. In fact, it edged out Sade’s “Soldier of Love,” a track that dominated my rotational play the majority of 2010, for “Best New Song” in The Best of 2010 series. It really took flight with me in February 2011, when The Community Planner changed the entire dynamic of our dating situation and work relationship by catching me off guard with a first kiss. The track kinda served as the theme song for how my entire demeanor changed from my well-established stoic, nonchalant, see everything in black and white, play by the book persona to something more engaging, more lively, and more go with the flow. My co-workers in the 11th Civil Engineer Squadron Customer Service Office noticed the change, leading to many questions about my dating status.

What it means to me now? Today, the track doesn’t carry the weight it did for that 4-month run in 2011 but it’s still one of my favorite tracks from the 80s.
