A Mother’s Love: Dedra C. Miller

by Dedra C. Miller

Motherhood started for me at the age of 19. I was young, basically homeless, and didn’t have a clue about being a mother. What I did know is that while I did not particularly love my child’s father, I did love my child very much. At age 20, I gave birth to my beautiful son. My journey as a mother had begun. It was tough. It was joyous. And I wouldn’t change it for nothing in the world. I do understand being a young mother often can mean different things to everyone. For me, it meant I had to grow up and be accountable. I had partied, stayed out late and all of that. What I wanted to do now was make a good life for my child.

15 years later, to my shock and dismay, I found out I would be a mother again! I really thought at this point in my life I would only have one child like my mother did, but God said different. So at the age of 35, I gave birth to my 2nd son. Giving birth at 20 and at 35 are two different worlds altogether!! This pregnancy gave me trouble. I nearly went into preterm labor after coming into contact with a horrible virus which caused me to become dehydrated. But again, God showed up and blessed me with my beautiful baby boy.

Being a single mother with my first child and then having a husband with my 2nd is a world of difference. And 9 months after the birth of my 2nd child, I found out I would be a mother a 3rd time! I never in my wildest dreams thought I would have 3 kids! But there I was about to be a mom again. And at the age of 36, I gave birth to my third and final child. A beautiful baby girl.

Being a mother is one of the biggest and most wonderful blessings God could bestow upon me. And in exchange for his blessings I make every effort to rear responsible, respectful, humane humans.

A mother’s love is unexplainable. It is a love like no other. I don’t take it lightly. I thank God for the opportunity to have it.
