Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 12/15/2017

So, as my wife is deep into this pregnancy, I’ve began to take on some of her weird appetites and food cravings. Last night, on the way home from class, I stopped by Papa John’s Pizza and ordered an extra-large cheese pizza. I ate the whole thing by myself…in less than an hour…at 10pm at night. It was definitely a lot of pizza but it was nothing compared to damage done in previous years. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the Little Caesars “Pizza by the Foot”.

How I first came across this moment? I first came across the pizza during a family reunion in 1997. While the adults were doing their thing, they sequestered the kids—all 8 of us that were there—into one room, which had a Sony PlayStation. One of my aunts ordered food from a nearby Little Caesars: a couple of huge pizzas known as Pizza by the Foot.

What it meant to me then? The Pizza by the Foot consisted of 3 deep dish pizzas—each cut into slices of 8—and 10 sticks of Crazy Bread. In 1997, that was an enormous amount of pizza. We had 2 of them. The 12-year-old version of myself—the eldest child in the room that night—ate at least 15 slices of pizza in the 2 hours we were by ourselves. I just remember it being so good.

What it means to me now? Today, having looked at the commercial for it, I’m of the belief that the Pizza by the Foot will never make an appearance back into the consumer market. For starters, you got 3 whole pizzas and an order of Crazy Bread for $10.99 back in 1997. In today’s time, that’s a $39.99 or more charge. And honestly, I don’t even think the market is there today. But, if it was, I’d definitely be in line to grab one…and I’d probably eat all 36 pizza slices and 10 breadsticks by myself.
