Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 8/18/2017

Today, I tried a new cafeteria for lunch: the American Red Cross Cafeteria. I was actually very pleased with the food selection and quality…so much so that maybe my days of eating at the Bison Bistro might be coming to a close. They had these rolls that were hot and soft. They felt like cotton candy in my mouth. I can count on one hand the number of places that have made me feel that way about bread. This week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series brings me to the best of that bunch: Quincy’s Family Steakhouse.

How I first came across this moment? My introduction to Quincy’s was late in the Summer of 1996. I was attending Mount Calvary Baptist Church as a guest of my friends, whom were members at the time. We usually got to and from the church via a ride from the church deacon—a kind, deeply-rooted family man named Birl Jackson. On many occasions, we’d join him and his family for after church dinners…being that we were at the church for Sunday school, morning service, and the late afternoon service. The go-to spot was usually the Quincy’s Family Steakhouse across Aaron Aronov Drive from the Western Hills Mall.

What it meant to me then? I was always excited to eat at Quincy’s during those fellowships. I always went for the pizza, the macaroni and cheese, and the rolls. In fact, it wasn’t unusual for me to eat that several times over in a single visit. The steak was also pretty good as was the popcorn shrimp and the chicken wings. More than the food was the laughs and conversations we enjoyed. It was usually a group of about 9 of us—me, my friends and their grandmother, Deacon Jackson, his wife, and their 3 grandsons—talking about what we learned in Sunday school and from Pastor Raymond Whitsey’s sermons. It was really good times.

What it means to me now? As I mentioned in a post about that church last year, I left after the pastor’s daughter rejected me in highly embarrassing fashion in the Spring of 1998. I never returned to the church, meaning I never again had an opportunity to fellowship with Deacon Jackson before his tragic and senseless death 4 years ago. Even more, I never returned to Quincy’s Family Steakhouse. This was around the time I started going to Golden Corral or Ryan’s with my family. The food was similar. I got the same things I got at Quincy’s but it wasn’t quite the same…at least it wasn’t with the rolls, anyway. Today, all of the Quincy’s Family Steakhouse locations are closed so there will never be another chance for me to enjoy those rolls. All I’ll have are the memories of how good they tasted and the good times I had while enjoying them.
