Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 6/9/2017

It’s another Friday morning here in the National Capital Region and my train into Downtown Washington is already 15 minutes late. According to the time board, it’ll be at least another 35 minutes before it gets here. I swear I never experienced this sort of ridiculousness in Tokyo. Anyway, I’m passing the time by listening to an Amy Winehouse mix on YouTube. She was such an incredible artist. It’s a shame that her life ended in the prime of her career. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: Amy Winehouse’s “Half Time”.

How I first came across this moment? I first came across the track when I acquired Amy’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures, her posthumous release in 2011. During the long drive from Waldorf, Maryland to Birmingham for Christmas, I listened to the entire album. I got to Track 8 and I liked the feel of it.

What it meant to me then? In the moment, I was really taken in by the lyrics. The beat certainly pushed it over the top.

What it means to me now? Some 5 ½ years later, the track still resonates with me…even more now. I’ve gained a bit of an underlying meaning of the lyrics, especially the chorus. That whole “Half time/Time to think it through/Consider the change/Seek it from a different view”. From my vantage, it’s all about making adjustments like every good coach does at halftime in sports.
