For the past couple of months, there has been a national craze as people across the country have been raiding electronic sections in big box stores in attempts to acquire the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic. It’s mostly people who weren’t even born when the NES was the “it” gaming console. I’ve been unsuccessful the last 3 weeks in trying to order one online. Today was my final try. All of this brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: the Nintendo Entertainment System.

How I first came across this moment? I was introduced to the Nintendo Entertainment System when I was around 4 or 5 years old. I can’t remember the specific date but it was in 1989. I was living with Grandma Sallie and my older cousin, whom had a Nintendo, would bring his over. He let me play Duck Hunt. I acquired my own Nintendo for Christmas the next year.

What it meant to me then? The NES was my first video game console. I was very excited to have one of my own. I remember my first games owned being the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt combination along with World Class Track Meet. During my years with an NES, I also owned R.C. Pro-Am, Bubble Bobble, Paperboy, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. My father often rented other games from for me from Blockbuster Video like Tecmo Bowl, Donkey Kong, and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! amongst others. The Nintendo was literally one of the reasons why I always did well in school and got my homework done quickly. My mother would only let me play when I finished up my work. It brought me a lot of joy as a young child.

What it means to me now? I rocked with the Nintendo until 1994. I transitioned to Sega Genesis on Christmas Day 1993 but I was still loyal to my first gaming console for almost another year. I haven’t played with one since 2008, when I played Super Mario Bros. at the Tokyo Game Show. It would’ve been nice to acquire the NES Classic and see if I still had “the juice” as it concerns all of the old games I used to play. Maybe another time for that. Nevertheless, the Nintendo Entertainment System will always be my first love of gaming consoles.
