Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 12/23/2016

Three weeks back, I wrote about an old show I used to watch faithfully on Nickelodeon. That same night, I saw one of the great sports game shows of all-time…one that always had me hyped. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: Nickelodeon Guts.

How I first came across this moment? I first came across Guts back in October 1993. My neighbor and I were watching Legends of the Hidden Temple and it came on directly after.

What it meant to me then? I was intrigued by the competition and how the contestants got medals like they were in the Olympics. The events were those I thought I would even be good at, like extreme baseball or the BMX bicycle race or the track run through the wind. Of course, I loved the Aggro Crag, which got me into the concept of mountain climbing and rock-climbing. I always rooted for the red contestant though I did show some love for purple, on occasion. Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mentioned the best part of entire series: the referee, Moira “Take It Away Mo” Quirk.

What it means to me now? Up until 3 weeks back, I hadn’t seen Guts since the mid-90s. Seeing the show as a grown adult made me wonder if I had the agility to take on some of those events. I know I got the speed but the agility may be another thing. But more than that, it brought back a piece of my childhood, which is never a bad thing. Hopefully, these reruns are still around when I have a kid. Maybe, I’ll build a Nickelodeon Guts-like obstacle course in the house and have her (or him) go through it.
