Flashback Friday Moment of The Week: 5/20/2016

So yesterday, I was hanging out with some of my classmates ahead of today’s commencement ceremony. It was good times catching up with them in real life as all of our interaction had been exclusively online. One of them was sporting a Kermit the Frog t-shirt that had an 80s vibe to it. I was actually envious of it as it reminded me of a unique time from my past. That brings me to this week’s moment in the Flashback Friday series: Muppet Babies.

How I first came across this moment? For sure, I know I came across Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies in 1990. My sister and I along with my cousins used to all sit on the pillows in Grandma Sallie’s living room and watch every Saturday morning on CBS. Grandma made sure we were all up at 6:30am in time for the show’s start at 7am. I’m reasonably certain though that we were hooked on Muppet Babies as far back as 1987. I’m pretty sure I didn’t just learn the “Give Food a Chance” song off the re-aired episodes.

What it meant to me then? I loved Muppet Babies as a much younger version of myself. I was a big fan of Baby Rowlf and his piano. One of my aunts actually got me a Baby Rowlf for Christmas when I was 6. I liked Baby Gonzo too and I remember having the red jumper with the chick on it like he did. Before I got into other Saturday morning cartoons like Bobby’s World, Tom and Jerry Kids, Dennis the Menace, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it was Muppet Babies. They were my first love of cartoons.

What it means to me now? I haven’t seen a Muppet Babies episode in at least 20 years, back when I was a Nickelodeon kid. I don’t think it was ever released on DVD and I’d be hard-pressed to find a VCR to play it on VHS, much less find someone who is selling the series on VHS. I still have tremendous love for the series though. It was about as close to pure children’s television as it gets.
